Putnam County Schools is committed to the safety and education of all our students and we believe it is important to share information with our families and school community regarding potential issues or concerns when they occur.
Late last evening, we were informed of concerns regarding a possible threat over a social media platform. Posts such as these cause disruption to our school and create fear among students and families.
Please know all potential threats are taken seriously. Upon being informed of the social media post, we contacted local law enforcement, who immediately responded to investigate the situation. It appears that the post was similar to those being shared throughout our region and referred to as “swatting”.
We will continue to have our School Resource Officer work closely with local law enforcement, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, WV State Police and Homeland security to monitor any situation, should it arise, to ensure Poca Middle School remains a safe place for learning.
Once again, we want to emphasize that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly at 304-755-7343. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we work together to keep our school community safe.
Putnam County Schools and Poca Middle School are committed to the safety and education of all our students. Essential to this commitment is open communication with our families and school community about potential concerns when they arise.
For this reason, I wanted to share some information regarding unsubstantiated or rumored threats circulating on a social media messaging platform.
Please rest assured that we take all threats seriously. Upon notification of reported threats, we contact law enforcement immediately to investigate any threat and its validity. The reported messages are being investigated and appear to be similar to other threats or messages being spread throughout our region. We understand that situations like this can be concerning, and we want to assure you that we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all.
Putnam County Schools will continue to work closely with local law enforcement, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and Homeland Security’s School Safety Unit to monitor any situation, should it arise, to ensure our school remains a safe place for learning.
Once again, we want to emphasize our unwavering commitment to the safety of our students and staff. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of our school communities and law enforcement agencies. Together, we will continue to work diligently to keep our schools safe and secure.
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with the school directly at 304-755-7343. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we work together to keep our school community safe.
Today, Poca Middle School was notified of suspicious activity near the railroad tracks in Poca. As a precaution and at the recommendation of local law enforcement, we placed the school in Secure at approximately 3:20 pm. The Secure status ended around 3:30 pm, lasting approximately ten minutes. All school operations have now returned to normal, including student dismissal.
The safety and well-being of your child continue to be our top priority, and we are committed to the safety and education of all our students. Essential to that commitment is open communication with our families and school. We will continue to work persistently to keep you informed and updated on fundamental news and happenings at Poca Middle School. Thank you for your support and patience.
Hello 7th grade families. This is reminder that all 7th grade students must have received the T-dap and meningococcal (MCV4) immunizations. If you have shot records to turn in to the school, this must be done no later than Thursday, September 5th. If we do not have shot records for your student, showing proof these two immunizations have been administered, your student will not be permitted to return to school after September 5th until they have received both shots. These absences will not be excused. You may call the Putnam County Health Department or your student's pediatrician to schedule these shots. Shot records may be turned in to the main office or faxed to 304-755-8930. Thank you!
Tryouts for tennis, volleyball, soccer, football, and cheerleading are beginning soon. Please contact the office if your child is interested in trying out but needs further information. Sports packets are available in the school office. All students must have a physical dated as of May 1, 2024 or later to try out for a sport.
Is your 7th grader ready for back to school?

Hello Poca Middle families! This is a reminder that the WV General Summative Assessments will take place this week. All grade levels will test on Tuesday & Wednesday, and 8th grade will also test on Thursday. Please ensure your students arrive to school on time, with their laptops and chargers. Students will be encouraged to leave their devices at school this week so they are present and fully charged. We ask that you avoid signing your student out on the above testing days between 8-11am, if at all possible. Encourage your student to try their best on these assessments--we know they're prepared and look forward to seeing the amazing academic progress they've made this year!
Hello Poca Middle families! We hope everyone had a safe and fun-filled Spring Break! Please remind your student to bring their fully charged laptops and charging cord to school tomorrow as they will complete their Reading Benchmark test in the morning. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
The PCS Transportation Department has determined that Heizer Creek road is flooded. Bus 1807 & 1409 will be unable to deliver students home. If you live out Heizer Creek and your student rides Bus 1807 or 1409, please pick your student up at school. The early dismissal will be excused due to the flooding. Thank you!
Parents: Bus 1602 will run its normal route in reverse order this afternoon due to a road blockage on Poca River Road. Students who ride 1602 and are typically delivered first will be dropped 15-20 minutes later today. Thank you!
Hello Poca Middle Families! Putnam County Schools has partnered with Rank One Computing (ROC.ai), a United States-based company and world leader in biometric face recognition and computer vision solutions, to introduce a Safer Schools Initiative, ROC Watch. The added layer of school safety and security at each of our schools in Putnam County will provide enhanced security via real-time monitoring of visitors entering schools.
You will receive a secure link via text message on your mobile phone in the next 48 hours to enroll in the visitor management system. The visitor management system allows Putnam County Schools to deter building access of all unauthorized individuals, including the ability to revoke access for legally restricted persons, former staff, expelled students, and child sex offenders.
Please use the link below to learn about ROC Watch and detailed steps outlining the enrollment process. It is a simple three-step process.

Hello Poca Middle families! This is a reminder of the planned state-wide internet outage tomorrow, Tuesday, December 19 in order to replace major equipment. In the event that the normal school phone lines (304-755-7343 & 304-755-4675) are affected and you need to call the school, the fax machine line will still function properly and will operate as the emergency phone line. That number is 304-755-8930. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work through this event together!
